Dr. Dean was raised in southwest Missouri on a small purebred hog and cattle farm. He began his education at Fort Scott Community College where he competed on livestock and meats judging teams and received an associates of science degree in 1996.
Dr. Dean was a member of a national champion livestock judging team in 1997 while attending Kansas State University and he received his B.S. degree in animal science in 1998. He then worked towards a M.S. degree in monogastric nutrition at Kansas State University while serving as a teaching assistant. His M.S. research evaluated the feeding value and processing characteristics of food grade sorghum genotypes and the toxicity of sorghum ergot. After attaining his M.S. degree in 2000, he served as an instructor and the coach of the livestock judging team at Louisiana State University while working towards a Ph.D. in monogastric nutrition. His Ph.D. research focused on the use of low crude protein, crystalline amino acid supplemented diets for both swine and poultry.
In 2005, Dr. Dean accepted a position with Akey as a swine nutritionist. He is a member of the American Society of Animal Science.
