Dr. Hidalgo is a native of Chile, and in 2001 he received his veterinary degree from St. Thomas University, in Santiago. For his thesis work, Marcelo investigated the effects of omega-3-fatty acid enrichment of meat and eggs on production and immunological function. During his veterinary studies, Marcelo received training in turkey, layer and broiler production, flock health and hatchery management. His studies also involved training in feed mill operations, including quality control procedures.

In 2005, Dr. Hidalgo received his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia Poultry Science Department. His studies involved the use of pearl millet as an alternate ingredient in broilers, the influence of protein to energy ratio on carcass parameters in broilers and the regulation of lipogenesis by dietary protein in broilers.

After receiving his Ph.D., Marcelo joined Centurion Poultry, Inc. Dr. Hidalgo provided technical support to customers utilizing Dekalb, Bovan and Hisex genetics in their layer operations in North America. He provided the nutrition program for their North American breeding stock and monitored feed quality and health status of the parent and grand parent operations.

In 2007, Dr. Hidalgo joined Akey’s poultry nutrition team and provides nutritional recommendations and technical support to poultry operations. He also is involved with Akey’s poultry research program.
